Welcome to our 2024 allotment garden! This season, we’ve meticulously planned a diverse array of plants that we’ll be nurturing and harvesting. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive list of the plants we’re growing, along with essential care information for each.
Plant List
Basil Sweet
Harvest estimate: 50 to 60 days
Plant location: Herb Garden in shed
Description: Easy to transfer from one soil environment to another. Can be eaten fresh or dried with Pizza, salads, soups, teas, and many other dishes.
Height: 20 to 150cm
Care Guide:
Water: Sweet Basil requires it's soil to be kept moist at all times. It needs frequent watering and will grow best if kept in a well-drained pot. Should be watered from the base of the plant.
Fertilization: Sweet Basil doesn't need large amounts of fertilizer. Overfertilization can cause the leaves of this species to curl and turn brown.
Pruning: Shape the plant every 2 months during the growing season. Pinch out leaves as you need them; regular harvest will keep plants growing strong and prevent flowering. When a branch has 6 to 8 leaves, harvest all but the first set of leaves.
=====
Blackcurrant
Harvest estimate: July to September
Plant location: Top left of plot
Description: A deciduous shrub that blooms from spring to summer with clusters of red-tipped green flowers. Berries ripen in late summer and can be eaten fresh or cooked. Grows in full sun to partial shade.
Height: 1.5m
Care Guide:
Water: Blackcurrant needs to be kept well watered to ensure good fruit production and as a result, it's a good idea to add some mulch in the spring to conserve moisture for the summer. Check the soil by hand to judge whether your plant needs watering and water when it feels dry to the touch.
Fertilization: Blackcurrant benefits greatly from fertilization. Top dress your blackcurrant with compost or manure and apply a slow-release fertilizer each spring.
Pruning: Shape the plant every 2 months during the growing season.
=====
Broccoli
Harvest estimate: 60 to 100 days
Plant location: Polytunnel
Description: A nutritious, cool-weather crop in the cabbage family grown worldwide. It is eaten as a vegetable, raw or cooked and is frequently added to salads, casseroles, or vegetable platters.
Care Guide:
Water: Moisture-loving, keep the soil moist but do not let the water accumulate.
Fertilization: Fertilize broccoli using a micronutrient fertilizer which will help to build the nutrients in the soil that it grows in. A water soluble fertilizer works best for brocolli and should be used when planting, re-potting and every 2 weeks. Always water your plant after fertilizing.
Pruning: Trim the diseased, withered leaves once a month.
=====
Cabbage
Harvest estimate: 60 to 90 days
Plant location: Polytunnel
Description: When you look at a wild cabbage plant, you may be surprised by how many edible vegetables were derived from it. People selectively cultivated the wild cabbage over centuries to produce Broccoli, Cauliflower, Kale, Kohlrabi, and more. The wild form of the plant if also edible.
Height: 60 to 150cm
Care Guide:
Water: Water Cabbage weekly on average, varying the frequency depending on how hot and dry it is. Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Avoid splashing water on the leaves to help prevent mildew and pest infestations. Water before and after applying fetilizer.
Fertilization: Amend the soil with compost or slow-release, balanced fertilizer during planting or transplanting Cabbage. A slow-release fertilizer can also be applied every three months. Alternatively a 10-10-10 fertilizer and be apploed every one or two weeks.
Pruning: Trim the diseased, withered leaves once a month.
